Have We Met?

Image by Woody Welch, Austin, Take at Design Ranch 2011

I had a friend many years ago who told me, “Everyone needs family.  If your biological family does not meet your needs, invent your own. They are the net you need  beneath you when you walk tightropes.”

From Atlanta to Bangkok, from New York to San Francisco, I’ve worked with a lot of great people. Those people and my life in those places has enriched me personally and professionally. But that was not always the way some folks saw it: I recall  a job interview long ago in which the interviewer told me that my resume looked like an itinerary, not a list of qualifications. I thought then he was wrong but I was too young to prove it.

Since then, my career  of travel experiences and friendship making has added much more to my life than stamps in my passport. My mentor George Goodwin, now 94, taught me the most important lesson I have ever learned in business in 1987: don’t take credit, share it. “And if you have a good friend, introduce him or her to another. You’ll be surprised how many people you will make happy.”
